How to store coffee

Coffee tastes best when it is fresh.

If you are wondering how to store coffee to preserve the organoleptic and sensory characteristics of freshly roasted coffee for as long as possible, rememeber that its greatest enemies are air, humidity, light and heat.

So to maintain its freshness for a long time, follow our tips.

How to store ground coffee

Coffee tastes best if it is ground shortly before use. This is because the essential oils that make your cup of coffee unique and full of aroma start to alter shortly after grinding.

That being said, it is clear that preserving ground coffee is more difficult.

So what to do?

Once you have opened your packet, immediately pour your blend into a ceramic, glass (if dark) or steel jar. The important thing is has and airlight closure. Store it in a cool, dry place and away from heat sources.

This prevents the coffee from absorbing other odours and losing its aromas.

How to store coffee beans

As with ground coffee, coffee beans are hygroscopic, i.e. they absorb water from the air and this accelerates their ageing process.

This is why, even though coffee beans are beautiful to look at, they should always be stored in a dark, airtight container and always in a cool, dry place.

Pods and capsules

For capsules or pods, since they contain coffee that can only be used once, there is no question of how to store their contents: once used, we only need to dispose of them according to the instructions on the packaging.

Does coffee keep in the fridge?

Storing coffee in the fridge is strongly inadvisable. Both ground coffee and coffee beans, in fact, suffer from temperature changes and the shock of leaving the fridge can lead to condensation forming inside the container. Moreover, as we have seen, coffee absorbs surrounding aromas and smells and the fridge is full of different smells created by the several foods we put in it.

Finally, beware of false beliefs! It isn’t true at all that adding an apple peel or a cork to coffee will preserve it from humidity. On the contrary, they risk ruining it and making it go rancid!
